Green Bean Seedlings!

by Elisabeth Halligan, RN, CPN, CLC on May 1, 2013

IMAG0842 300x179 Green Bean Seedlings! So excited! I got my green bean seedlings transferred from the jiffy pots to my homemade containers (red plastic party cups with holes poked in the bottom for drainage).

Green beans are not well known for their ability to survive transplanting… but our growing season is SO short up here! If even a small portion of these transfer successfully we will have a relatively nice crop of fresh green beans. And… it will at the very least be a good learning experience.

Starting to Have Fun! Turbo Jam Challenge Level 1 – Day 7

April 30, 2013

Seven days in and finally… it’s starting to feel like fun! The punches are feeling strong… the kicks are gaining intensity. This is the feeling I remember from when I used to do Turbo Jam every day! I forgot to weigh before I ate breakfast so I will check weight tomorrow morning to see if [...]

Turbo Jam Challenge Level 1 – Day 6

April 29, 2013

I can’t believe the first week of this challenge is almost over! It’s Monday… so Patrick is home with Mum, but the big kids and Daddy are off at school. I wish I had the ability to videotape Patrick “working out” with me. It was pretty funny. He really got into the kicking and punching [...]

Fighting With the Scale: Turbo Jam Challenge Level 1 – Day 5

April 28, 2013

One more night shift down – 5 days of Turbo Jam done! (Last night shift tonight until next Friday… whew!) I actually had some fun with it today. My body is starting to get the hint that I’m not giving up on this! So, imagine my “joy” to get on the scale when I woke [...]

Pushing Through Fatigue: Turbo Jam Challenge Level 1 – Day 4

April 27, 2013

I work nights on Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights as a neonatal nurse. It’s a long shift – 12 hours – made even longer by a 60 mile drive each way. I was seriously dragging butt this morning when I got home. I remember sitting in the car thinking, “Seriously, I’m going to go in [...]

Dealing with De-Motivators: Turbo Jam Challenge Level 1 – Day 3

April 26, 2013

Well, I made it through Day 3… physically it was a little easier but I knew it was going to be harder to just do it. You see, Tuesday-Thursday, my husband and the kids are all in school. I have the house to myself. On Fridays, though, neither the preschooler nor my husband have classes. [...]

Turbo Jam Challenge Level 1 – Day 2

April 25, 2013

Day 2 is in the can! In some ways it was a little harder today because I was already kind of sore and stiff from yesterday. I have to admit, I had a great day yesterday, on a high from the exercise, but I hit a wall around 5pm and crashed out on the couch. [...]

Turbo Jam Challenge Level 1 – Day 1

April 24, 2013

Wow… I did NOT expect that to be so hard… but at the same time, I did it! Yay! A little background: I used to use Turbo Jam on a daily basis as my base level of fitness. I love Chalene and I love the fun, dance-like moves and the upbeat music. When I got [...]

Why Do Human Babies Need Human Milk?

April 3, 2013

What does “Species Specific” Mean? Species specific means that the milk of each mammal species is designed specifically to meet the needs of that species. It is not designed for any other mammal… just others of its own kind. That isn’t just important for human babies, all mammal babies need the right species of milk. [...]

In Defense of Western Medicine

April 3, 2013

I can imagine that a few of my friends are chuckling at the title of this piece. It’s no secret that I am an outspoken critic of much of what Western medicine (allopathy) does. But there is one area where allopathy shines… emergencies and acute situations. Break your arm? All the positive thinking in the [...]

Dangerous Breastfeeding Misinformation

April 2, 2013

Today I was alerted by The Guggie Daily about some dangerous misinformation being spread about breastfeeding. The Weston A. Price Foundation is looked at by many in the whole foods/clean eating movement as a source of reliable, safe information. The Unlatched website today exposed their dangerous claims about their cow’s milk based infant formula recipe [...]

Hierarchy of Healing

April 2, 2013

It is important that we approach the healing process in a somewhat systematic way. This is not because healing is such a straight-forward process. No, it just helps us to make sure we haven’t forgotten something important or something so basic (but necessary) that it didn’t occur to us. This is not the only possible [...]

The Hippocratic Oath

March 26, 2013

I swear by Apollo the physician and Aesculapius, and Health, and All-heal, and all the gods and goddesses, that, according to my ability and judgment, I will keep this Oath and this stipulation — to reckon him who taught me this Art equally dear to me as my parents, to share my substance with him, [...]
